    CAREGIVER TRAINING REGULATIONS & FACTS

    Washington’s Commitment to Senior Care

    Did you know?

Facing a 28% senior population surge, Washington prioritizes safety and professionalism through strict caregiver training. 75 mandatory hours + annual updates ensure HCAs possess the necessary skills, while around 222-topic curriculum guarantees in-depth knowledge. This commitment empowers caregivers and potentially reduces healthcare costs. Here’s what more you should know:

    Certification

Washington Home Care Aides (HCAs) must complete the state-approved basic training and pass the HCA certification exam. Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) have their own state-approved training and certification requirements, distinct from HCAs.

    Licensing

Unlike many states, Washington does not mandate licensing for HCAs. However, agencies employing HCAs require licensing from DSHS, ensuring adherence to training and quality standards.

    Regulatory Body

The Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) oversees caregiver training regulations, approves training providers, and issues HCA certifications.

Learn2Care provides comprehensive training designed to equip caregivers with essential skills for success. Our program offers instructor-led, hands-on training tailored to meet the specific needs of home care agencies in Washington.

    Got a Question?

You need to complete 75 hours of DSHS-approved basic training. This can be done through online or in-person programs. Be sure to choose a DSHS-approved program, as online options require specific approval.

Caregivers must complete 12 hours of Continuing Education (CE) annually to maintain their state registration. Most training programs offer CE courses as well.

Our comprehensive curriculum includes essential topics relevant to providing safe and compassionate care, including:

    • Patient care safety: preventing neglect, abuse, and exploitation
    • Responding to emergencies in the home
    • Infection control and basic hygiene practices
    • Back safety and safe movement techniques
    • Helping with activities of daily living (ADLs)
    • Ensuring adequate nutrition & hydration for clients
    • And much more!

Absolutely! Learn2Care's platform offers flexible, mobile-friendly online courses. Download lessons for offline access, learn from any device and maximize your learning even with busy schedules.

HCAs provide basic non-medical care, such as assistance with daily living activities. HHAs perform more complex tasks under supervision, like monitoring vital signs and administering medications. CNAs offer the most comprehensive care, including basic nursing skills.

Unfortunately, existing caregiver training from another state may not automatically qualify you to work as a caregiver in Washington. Each state has its own specific training and certification requirements for caregivers, and Washington is no exception.

    • Caregivers looking to climb the career ladder and transition into leadership roles
    • Any aspiring leader in the home care industry who wants to develop their skills
    • Multi-faceted business including budgeting, team management, and performance reviews
    • Leadership behaviors like effective communication, delegation, and conflict resolution
    • Effective communication practices for inspiring and motivating teams
    • Effective problem-solving strategies specific to the home care industry
